Honoring Excellence in Engineering and Computing
The Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC) has established prestigious awards to recognize individuals in and outside the University who have significantly contributed to the profession of engineering and computing through their activities, achievements, and scholarship. Each year, recipients are selected and honored at the MCEC event throughout the year. Nominations for these awards are solicited from all sources by college recognition committees. The selection committees use specific criteria in evaluating nominations, ensuring that the honorees exemplify distinction in the engineering and computing fields.
Edward T. Bryand Recognition Banquet
In 1979, Engineering Dean Jim Clapp organized the College Recognition Committee, named after alumnus Edward T. Bryand ’52, with all engineering departments, physics and chemistry to serve on the committee.
The first College Recognition Banquet was held in 1980. Criteria were established for two awards: Ashley S. Campbell Award and the Edward T. Bryand Distinguished Engineering Award.
Other awards for individuals and students were added thru the years and the awards have continued every year since 1980, including the Leila C. Lowell Award for staff members that began in 1983.
The ceremony happens in November each year and has become the College of Engineering and Computing’s most prized event where our faculty and staff are recognized for their dedication and achievements in engineering, research, and public service.
Francis Crowe Society
The purpose of the Francis Crowe Society is to recognize UMaine engineering graduates as they accomplish the formidable goal of completing their engineering degrees and to recognize others who have made considerable engineering contributions and honored the profession.
Gorman Emeriti Brunch
Currently on hiatus. We look forward to celebrating this tradition again in the future.
Since 2000, the Maine College of Engineering and Computing at the University of Maine began what has become one of our most enjoyable traditions where we celebrate the career of a distinguished emeritus faculty member at the annual Gorman Emeriti Brunch. Our thanks go out to James and Maureen Gorman who have made this event possible through their support.
