Dual Concentrations in Marine Science

The School of Marine Sciences offers a unique, strongly interdisciplinary MS degree program, the dual concentration, where students concurrently complete concentrations in both marine policy and the biophysical marine sciences (i.e., marine biology or oceanography). This pathway is intended for students interested in the application of science and policy in government agencies, non-government organizations or industry. 

The course of study is three years. It leads to a Master of Science in Marine Science with two concentrations (or subplans): one in oceanography or marine biology and another in marine policy. Six hours of each degree can be counted as electives for the other; thus, a total of only 48 credit hours is required to complete both degrees (rather 60 credit usually required for two masters). Students in the dual concentration pathway are required to have confirmed co-chairs of their advisory committee before matriculating for their first semester. Also, for the dual concentration pathway, the student’s advisory committee, at a minimum, consists of the two co-chairs/advisors (one from each concentration), plus one additional member with expertise in a social sciences field and one additional member with expertise in a biophysical sciences field. 

Students completing the dual concentration pathway may elect to have a single thesis that links their interests in marine biophysical and social sciences, or two independent theses.
