In the event of an emergency or weather closure, the University of Maine Police Department (UMPD) distributes messages through email, SMS (text message), and phone calls. Emergency notifications and updates are also posted to the UMaine website.

Public & Family

The University of Maine partners with Smart911 to deliver emergency notifications to the public. Detailed instructions are available.

Students, Faculty and Staff

To receive these messages you must be signed up through our emergency notification system. Instructions to sign up or modify your current emergency notification preferences are available from the University of Maine System Information Technology (UMS IT) team.

Additional Safety Resource: Black Bear Safe App

UMPD also offers the Black Bear Safe mobile app, which provides additional safety services and resources for the UMaine and UMaine Machias communities. The app includes quick access to UMPD, emergency call features, campus safety information, crime prevention tips, and other tools designed to help keep you informed, connected, and safe. We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to download the Black Bear Safe app. Downloading the Black Bear Safe app does not replace the need to sign up for emergency notifications as referenced above.
