Project Summary
The Sustainable Aquaculture Workforce Innovation Center (SAWIC) is a 14,200-square-foot facility designed to strengthen Maine’s aquaculture sector through research, innovation and workforce development. It builds on UMaine’s leadership in marine science and applied aquaculture research.
Equipped with specialized tank systems and commercial-scale technology, SAWIC will provide hands-on training that mirrors modern aquaculture production environments. Students will gain practical experience to meet growing industry demand.
The center will also serve as a hub for applied research and collaboration among faculty, students and industry partners. It will advance innovation in fish health, nutrition, new species and sustainable production practices.
