Mechanical Engineering (M.S.)
About
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine offers graduate programs leading to Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. These programs are designed to provide a strong foundation in mechanical engineering while allowing students to tailor their studies to individual research interests and career goals. Each student works closely with a faculty advisor and graduate committee to develop a personalized Program of Study.
Program Highlights
Concentrations
Robotics and Mechatronics
Advances in robotics and mechatronics have had a profound impact in many areas, including manufacturing, healthcare, shipping, space exploration, and autonomous systems. By completing this concentration, students will gain the necessary knowledge in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science to pursue a career in this area. With expertise at UMaine in engineering and computer science, students will be able to take courses from multiple departments.
Smart Manufacturing
Smart manufacturing aims to convert data, acquired across the product life cycle, into manufacturing intelligence to improve manufacturing. The emergence of cyber-physical systems and related innovations, including digital twin / digital thread, can be leveraged and effectively integrated into support of data-driven manufacturing or Industry 4.0. The systematic computational analysis of manufacturing data can lead to more informed decisions, which in turn can enhance the effectiveness of modern manufacturing.
Requirements
Accelerated Program
The Department of Mechanical Engineeringย at UMaine offers a Master of Science (MS) Program โย Accelerated Trackย to qualified undergraduate students by allowing up to 9ย creditsaย of approved 400/500-level courses (minimum 3 credits at 500 level) to be double-counted toward their BSbย and MS degrees.
Admission Process
Allotted Time Limits
Students in the thesis (4+2) option must complete the requirements for the masterโs degree within 27 months after matriculation in the masterโs program to double count the credits earned in their undergraduate senior year.
Students in the non-thesis (4+1) option must complete the requirements for the masterโs degree within 15 months after matriculation in the masterโs program to double count the credits earned in their undergraduate senior year.
However, any student who does not complete the degree within the allotted time limit may not count toward the masterโs degree any courses also applied to the bachelorโs degree unless the studentโs committee petitions the Graduate School for extension due to extraordinary circumstances and the Graduate School grants the exception.
Switching Between the Thesis and Non-Thesis Options
If a student starts in the thesis (4+2) option and requests to switch to the non-thesis (4+1) option, s/he must complete all the requirements for the masterโs degree (non-thesis option) within 15 months of finishing the bachelorโs degree, otherwise the graduate courses taken as a senior may not also be applied to the masterโs degree.
If a student starts in the non-thesis (4+1) option and requests to switch to the thesis option, s/he must complete all the requirements for the masterโs degree (thesis option) within 27 months of finishing the bachelorโs degree, otherwise the graduate courses taken as a senior may not also be applied to the masterโs degree.
