We’ll delve into best practices for processing, protecting, and sharing data gathered from student evaluations of teaching and learn about alternatives to current evaluation methods.

Sept 20: Classroom Inclusion Lab – Tackling Bias in the Classroom with UNH PowerPlay
Actors with UNH PowerPlay Interactive Development will present live scenarios revealing subtle and obvious biases, using audience input to rewind the scenes to develop viable intervention and inclusion strategies.
Presented in partnership with the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

September 24: The Myth of Electability – What it Really Takes for Women to Win
Emily Cain ’02, executive director of Emily’s List, delivers the TIAA Distinguished Honors Graduate Lecture for 2019-2020 to remind us that electability is not reality, and to share stories of how women are truly leading systemic change in our political landscape.
Presented in partnership with the Honors College with support from TIAA Financial Solutions.

September 27: Empowering Women Innovators and Entrepreneurs
This discussion with accomplished entrepreneurs is intended to inspire other women to capitalize on their research and consider commercialization.

October 8: Advancing to Full
This popular workshop focuses on providing tried-and-true strategies to help associate professors prepare a compelling promotion portfolio. Join newly promoted colleagues as they share their best advice during an informal panel discussion and Q & A with the audience.

October 10: Violence Against Women: It’s a Men’s Issue
Author, educator and pioneering activist on issues of gender and race violence will highlight the impacts of toxic masculinity and offer viable strategies for intervening whenever and wherever biases are revealed. Attend this event to learn about the Mentors in Violence Prevention program that empowers men to to prevent violence.
Presented in partnership with Athletics, the College of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Division of Student Life, the Honors College, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

October 22: Patriarchy and Politics: A Discussion with Professor Greta LaFleur
Presented in partnership with the Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Fund and the University of Maine Foundation.

Registration is not required for this special event, which has limited seating. Light refreshments will be provided prior to the event, beginning at 9:30 am. 

October 22: Little Hall – Keep the Name or Change It?
This panel discussion considers the current question about changing the name of one of UMaine’s busiest buildings. Should we honor Clarence Cook Little, who was known to support theories of white supremacy. Explore this question with our panel.
This event, which is not a debate, is intended to provide information to the campus community.

October 24: GRIDSHOCK
Meet award-winning director Vanessa McNeal, and screen her new documentary that shines a light on the sex trafficking industry in rural Iowa. A panel discussion highlighting local support services and initiatives follows the film, and will include McNeal.
Presented in partnership with the College of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Division of Student Life, the Honors College, the Mabel Wadsworth Center, Partners for Peace, Rape Response Services, St. Andre Home/Courage Lives, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

This event is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is not required. McNeal will speak briefly prior to the start of the film; the panel discussion will start at the conclusion of the film.

November 8: You Talkin’ to ME? Creating an Inclusive Pedagogy 
Dr. Mark Lee, associate professor of biology at Spelman College, will illustrate methods of creating a more inclusive learning environment while maintaining the rigor of instruction.
Presented by the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning and the Rising Tide Center.

November 8: What Happy College Students Know – A Lunch & Chat
Join Dr. Mark Lee, an associate professor at Spelman College for a discussion about fostering happiness in high-achieving college students. Discussion will focus on techniques that foster a better sense of “self” and can form the building blocks for personal and academic success.
Presented by the Multicultural Student Center and the Rising Tide Center.

November 12: Gender Bias in the Perception of Physicians – Patient Ratings of Warmth and Competence
Dr. Mollie Ruben, assistant professor of Psychology, shares her research with the UMaine community.
