Description

Skylar Bayer received her B.Sc. in Marine Biology at Brown University (2008), and her M.Sc. in Biological Oceanography from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program (2011). She joined the Wahle Lab at the Darling Marine Center in 2011 to study reproductive ecology in the fishery species giant sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus). Specifically, she looks at issues of how population density and abundance effect fertilization success of scallop eggs. The lessons learned from this work will help inform fishery management, especially in regards to the effectiveness of closed areas. She has been featured on TheColbert Report in a case of missing scallop gonads, has been a producer for The Story Collider, runs her radio show the Strictlyfishwrap Science Radio Hour out of WRFR-LP in Rockland, Maine and recently gave a TEDx talk on “Why the sex lives of our seafood matters.”
