Art

Our undergraduate, graduate, and gallery programming is at the forefront of contemporary concerns in art practices; art history, criticism, and theory; and art pedagogy.

About

The Department of Art at the University of Maine offers dynamic, interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs: the B.A. in Art History; B.A. in Art Education; B.A. & B.F.A. in Studio Art; M.A. & M.F.A. in Intermedia; and minors in Art History, Graphic Design & Studio Art. The department balances a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with intensive study of the visual arts. By researching, critiquing, producing, exhibiting, and teaching art, our students become informed and creative contributors to 21st-century global culture.

Undergraduate Studies

Our degree programs and minors prepare students for graduate study (M.F.A., M.A., and/or Ph.D.) and a variety of employment opportunities in the arts, design, museums and galleries, education, the creative economy, and other fields. Our graduates have careers in K-12 education; academia and higher education; studio art; filmmaking; graphic design; archives, galleries, and museums; libraries; public and private arts administration; art conservation, historic preservation, and public heritage; communications; arts criticism; and other professional disciplines.

Graduate Studies

The Graduate Programs in Intermedia offer graduate students the opportunity to pursue innovative creative and theoretical work within a flexible, interdisciplinary framework. Centered on studio practice, the program emphasizes hybrid research and experimental production across a wide range of contemporary art forms, including time-based media, digital and video art, installation, performance, artists’ books and multiples, community-engaged social practices, conceptual art, and emerging media.
While the program encourages the exploration of new and hybrid forms, it maintains strong connections to traditional disciplines such as music, writing, performance studies, media studies, and the visual arts. The term “Intermedia” reflects the program’s commitment to fostering creative work that exists between and beyond conventional categories of artistic practice—both technically and conceptually.

Lord Hall Gallery

Lord Hall Gallery is a laboratory for learning and a cultural hub at the University of Maine. Gallery exhibitions and events spark curiosity and stimulate dialogue across campus.

The Gallery connects artists, students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the larger community through its diverse exhibitions of contemporary art. It presents both group and solo shows, representing the work of local, regional, national, and international artists. UMaine student and faculty artwork is celebrated during annual and bi-annual exhibitions.

Lord Hall Gallery is committed to diversity and inclusion in all of its programming. All exhibitions and events are free, accessible, and open to the public. Outreach at the local and state level is central to the Gallery’s mission.

Lord Hall Gallery is located on the mall of the University of Maine in the historic Lord Hall and is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-4:00pm. Events are free, accessible and open to the public. All are welcome.
