Tom graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and was commissioned as a Naval officer. He completed his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin in 2001. After nuclear power training and submarine school, he was stationed on the USS Annapolis for 3 years, followed by the USS Pittsburgh for 1 year. He left in the Navy in 2007 and finished his Ph.D. at the University of Maine in 2010. Tom was a physics professor at Husson University for 15 years and joined the UMaine Physics department as a lecturer in 2024.

Research Interests

  • Theoretical condensed-matter physics: phase transitions and critical phenomena.
  • Science education: interdisciplinary classroom approaches to climate change, energy, and sustainability.
  • Sustainability: curriculum development, energy analyses of green technologies.
