Dan Hayes

Barbara Wheatland Professor of Geospatial Analysis and Remote Sensing
School of Forest Resources

Dan Hayes is the Barbara Wheatland Professor of Geospatial Analysis and Remote Sensing in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine, where he directs the Wheatland Geospatial Laboratory. His research uses remote sensing, airborne LiDAR, field measurements, and ecosystem models to study forest productivity, dynamics, disturbance, and management, with applications spanning Maine’s working forests to the Arctic-boreal region. He works on large, interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects with various NASA, DOE, NSF, USDA, and regional and private programs. Hayes currently serves on the Maine Climate Council Science and Technical Subcommittee, and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Forestry and Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment. Before joining UMaine, he was a research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He teaches courses in remote sensing, forest inventory, and ecosystem science.
