University of Maine Athletics: Developing Champions with Integrity

Our community shares the unifying understanding that developing champions with integrity is at the heart of our daily work.”

Our Core Values

Integrity: Do the right thing
Accountability: Responsibility for actions and commitments
Toughness: Unyielding grit
Excellence: A mindset and expectation of being outstanding

These values are the essence of our mission which summarizes why we do what we do:

As the state’s only Division I program, Maine Athletics is committed to developing high-
character champions filled with pride and integrity who are dedicated to excellence in the
classroom and in competition. We strive to unite our community by mirroring the state’s deep
rooted commitment to perseverance, hard work and meaningful impact in all of our endeavors.
By intentionally fostering a diverse, welcoming environment, Black Bear athletics is dedicated to
equipping the next generation of leaders for success after sport.

While the mission is the north star of our daily work, the big-picture vision inspires us to continually show up for our bigger purpose:

To support our region and state by sustaining an authentic, student-athlete centered
championship culture that consistently finishes as one of the top five Division I athletics
programs in New England.

“It should be no different than treating a sprained ankle. If you’re having an issue that’s emotional or behavioral, the expectation should be that you step forward and do something about it.”
