Welcome to Wilton

The town of Wilton was incorporated in 1803 and quickly grew as a thriving mill town. One of these mills was the long-time home of G. H. Bass & Co, creator of the “Weejun” style loafer shoe. While the mills have relocated, much of Wilton’s proud history is still visible in well-preserved buildings in the downtown area. Nowadays the town has shifted to become an outdoor recreation destination, thanks to its beautiful and pristine Wilson Lake and convenient access to the surrounding forests and mountains.

Fun Facts

  • Wilton’s mills included many firsts, including the first cotton mill in Maine and the first toothpick manufacturing mill.
  • Popular singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne spent much of his youth in Wilton.
