Events

Spring

    • This annual festival is held on the third weekend in May and is a great opportunity for those interested in birding and art. The whole weekend is packed with different birding activities.
Summer
  • Deer Isle 4th of July Parade Deer Isle-Stonington, ME 04681

    • The day starts with a parade beginning around 10 am in the Deer Isle Village. At 9 pm, there are fireworks starting at Stonington Harbor. In between these two events, feel free to take the chance to explore Deer Isle by visiting the restaurants or walking around the island and visiting the shops. There are also usually smaller events like magic shows for the kids.

    • On the first Friday of every month from June through October, there is a pop-up market featuring artisans and food vendors. Local restaurants offer specials, and galleries and studios are open to explore. Participating venues would be marked with red DIS Friday flags.
  • Fisherman’s Day Stonington Commercial Fish Pier, Stonington, ME 04681

    • “Come join us on the Commercial Fish Pier for a fun, family day honoring our local fishermen! Events include a pet show, wacky rowboat races, codfish relay, trap hauling demonstration, bounce house, watermelon eating contest and more!” Held in July.
  • Stonington Lobster Boat Races Stonington Commercial Fish Pier, Stonington, ME 04681 | (207) 266-5113

    • They hold a standard race, the John Bay Boat Company Exhibition Race, and the Jimmy Stevens Cup awarded to the Fastest Working Lobster Boat. Signups begin at 7 am, and the race starts at 10 am.
Fall
  • Peninsula Potters Deer Isle, ME 04627

    • During Indigenous People’s Day Weekend, there is a tour of talented local potters who open their studios to visitors. On the site above, there is a map of all the potters participating in this event.
Winter
  • Healthy Island Project: Winterfest Island Community Center, 6 Memorial Ln, Stonington, ME 04681 | (207) 367-6332

    • Held on the third weekend in January every year, this fun event is welcome for everyone and most activities are free! Activities include ice skating, bonfires, fireworks, and all kinds of family events.

    • Small stable specializing in hunt seat riding and teaches horseback riding to riders of all levels.

    • Opened from May to October on Fridays from 10 am to 12 pm. They have native produce, meat, local seafood, cheeses, specialty foods, and bakery goods, fine artists, craftspeople, and community organizations.

Golf

    • Golf and tennis club where both visitors and members are welcome! They also have the Fairway Cafe great for lunch and beverages, and the Club House with a pro shop, kitchen, and free Wi-Fi.

Hiking

    • Easy 1.5-mile trail with sights of Barred Island, Crockett Cove, and a sandy beach.

    • This beautiful path hugs the shore for beautiful views.  Again, be careful of the roots. There are several options; long and short.

    • This has a relatively easy walk through the woods to the shore. Be careful of the many roots on the path and bring bug spray for mosquitos!

Historic

    • “The museum’s exhibits celebrate the skill and bravery of Stonington’s quarrymen, as well as the fascinating history of the Deer Isle granite industry. The quarriers’ risky work cut the distinctive pink granite used in such 20th-century monuments as New York’s Rockefeller Center, approaches to the Manhattan and George Washington Bridges and the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.”

    • The Society’s headquarters includes five buildings and a variety of displays and is staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers who are able to answer questions, point out features of displays, and assist those who want to do research.

Lighthouses

    • While there are no actual lighthouses on Deer Isle, there are 8 lighthouses within 12 miles and 3 of these can be seen from the island. Deer Isle has worked with the US Lighthouse Society and Lighthousefriends to create the Lighthouse Trail, where you can visit all 8 lighthouses and acquire stamps at each in your own Lighthouse Passport.

Rainy Day Activities
