February 8: Interpreting Peer Committee Letters – Learn the implied meaning of terms used commonly in peer evaluation when viewed through the lens of gender.

March 22: A Social Justice Activist’s Perspective on Call-out Culture, Identity Politics and Political Correctness – Author and activist Julia Serano will share insights into the purpose of social justice activism and its limitations.

March 26: EMILY’S LIST and the Women who will WIN in 2018 – Emily Cain, Executive Director of EMILY’S LIST visits UMaine to discuss the impact of the November 2016 presidential election on the political aspirations of women in Maine, and across the country.

May 15: Advancing Women in Academia-7th Annual Networking Conference

August 14: Dept Chair/Director Professional Development Day
New chairs and directors will have an opportunity to interact with experienced administrative colleagues to support their transition to leadership roles. Afternoon sessions will help administrators clarify their roles and identify specific ways to enhance their value within the unit.

September 26: Damon A. Williams Inclusive Excellence Tour
Scholar-leader, diversity strategist, and equity champion Damon A. Williams shares his insights in a conversation with the UMaine community intended to sustain inclusive excellence.

October 4: Against My Will
Activist, educator, and artist Traci Molloy explores human trauma and grief experienced by survivors of violence, highlighting those who are often invisible with a celebration of resiliency. This presentation complements an outdoor exhibition of Traci’s art on the UMaine mall.

October 4 – October 24: Against My Will Exhibit
The art of Traci Molloy will be featured on the mall at UMaine in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. View images of a population who are often marginalized and made invisible – survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

Presented in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This exhibit, which is free and open to all, will be featured from Oct. 4 – Oct. 24. 

October 11: Advancing to Full
This panel discussion with recently promoted faculty offers tips and tricks, and helpful strategies for colleagues seeking to achieve the rank of full professor.

October 23: Makeshift Coffeehouse – Why do you vote the way you do?
This facilitated forum is intended to support civil expression of opposing viewpoints in an effort to mitigate the current political divide that impacts us all.

October 24: The Voiceless
Award-winning director Vanessa McNeal highlights the impact of sexual violence on all of us with stories from male survivors. Screen the film, and participate in a Q & A session with Vanessa.

November 2: Facilitating Students’ Sense of Belonging in your Classroom
Classrooms, whether online or in person, create a perfect space to foster acceptance and feeling valued, but small gestures and unintentional actions can inadvertently promote anxiety and isolation. In this workshop, we’ll explore these concepts, work through common scenarios encountered in UMaine classrooms and outline ways to ensure equitable treatment of all students to advance their involvement, engagement and success in your programs.
