SPRING
April 26 & 27: WiSTEMM Spring Symposium 2017
April 26 events will be held in the Bangor Room of the Memorial Union; April 27 events will be held in Wells Conference Center.
Attend a variety of workshops and presentations at the first annual WiSTEMM Spring Symposium. This 2-day event offers insights into issues such as imposter syndrome, working effectively in diverse groups, and mid career advice for women faculty. The symposium concludes with a keynote address by Betty Woodman of the Maine Business School and a networking event with wine and cheese.

May 16: Advancing Women in Academia
This annual networking conference brings together faculty from public and private institutions across Maine to support collaboration and spark innovation.
8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Hilton Garden Inn Grand Ballroom, Bangor
This event is free and open to members of the higher education community across Maine. Graduate students are also welcome. Please register to ensure adequate seating and refreshments.

Sept. 26 & 27: Mentor Training Workshop
Thinking about volunteering as a faculty mentor? Attend one of these training sessions to hear more about TARGETED MENTORING, a program that offers big benefits for a small commitment. Learn more about the Targeted Mentoring program, and plan to join us if you think you can help!

Oct. 17: Advancing to Full
Calling all Associate Professors! Faculty panelists in this popular workshop will share tried and true strategies for preparing a compelling promotion portfolio, and answer audience questions about the process.

Nov. 2: Fostering a Culture of Collegiality in Academic Departments – A Workshop for Chairs and Directors
This workshop is a must for department chairs and for faculty seeking to enhance the climate in their units. Dr. Libby Roderick, director of the University of Alaska’s Difficult Dialogues Initiative will help you improve your department by sharing best practices for addressing negative behaviors and attitudes.

Nov. 3: Difficult Dialogues in the Classroom, Part I
Intense political and social polarization are affecting us negatively, in subtle and overt ways. Facilitating safe and civil classroom discussion is essential to education; we must support expression of minority opinions. Join Libby Roderick from the University of Alaska to learn more about fostering productive teaching discussions. A follow-up session (Part II) is planned for May 2018.

Nov. 9: Promotion & Tenure Panel
Join the Provost and recently tenured faculty to learn more about promotion and tenure processes at UMaine, including when and how to start building your packet, where to find help with questions, what to expect from your peer committee and your chair, and more! Invited panelists include Rob Glover (Political Science), Heather Hamlin (Marine Sciences), Amanda Olsen (Earth Sciences), and Tim Waring (Economics).

Nov. 14: Dept. Chairs/Directors Breakfast – Supporting Pre-Tenure Faculty.
Conversations over breakfast will focus on strategies and methods for supporting new, junior, and pre-tenure faculty. Learn about mentoring, family-friendly policies including Stopping the Tenure Clock, and more!
