Blue Light Emergency Call Boxes

Why Callboxes?

After the Jeanne Clery Act was signed into law, campus safety, transparency, crime reporting, etc. became the forefront of many high level discussions on campuses across the nation. One of the resulting areas that received massive amounts of warranted attention was the area of emergency callboxes.

According to public safety equipment developer, Axon, “By 2005, 91% of four-year colleges receiving government aid had emergency blue light phones.”

What to use them for?

These callboxes can be used for any kind of assistance, as well as to report various types of incidents including:

  • Crimes
  • Suspicious person(s)
  • Lost, found, or stolen property
  • Car trouble
  • Medical problems
  • Fires
  • To request a personal escort

All callboxes are marked by a highly visible blue light on the top of the stanchion. This blue strobe light will flash when you push the call button, as a quick visual signal for assistance.

The UMaine Map lists callbox locations under the Emergency category.
