Keep up with technologies and trends in thermoformed molded fiber!

In December 2024, the Process Development Center successfully hosted the Thermoformed Molded Fiber Symposium, the first event dedicated specifically to technical advances and trends in thermoformed molded fiber. Building on the momentum of this event, we are excited to launch The Tray newsletter to foster a community dedicated to discussing technical advancements and industry topics related to thermoformed molded fiber.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to The Tray Newsletter please fill out the interest form below, we invite  researchers and industry professionals to contribute stories and updates!

Innovating Sustainable Food Packaging with CNF-Coated Molded Fiber
Plastic waste is choking our planet, but Ph.D. student Nabanita Das is changing the game with cellulose nanofibril (CNF) coatings for molded fiber food containers. Her research enhances oil and grease resistance while ensuring microwave compatibility, making sustainable packaging a reality. Using hybrid fiber substrates made from medium wood flour (0.33 mm fiber thickness), she applies a 5 g/m² CNF coating through controlled drying and hot-pressing techniques. These coated containers undergo rigorous testing, including oil resistance, porosity, and microwave heating with food, proving their durability. The results? A promising biodegradable alternative to plastic takeout containers—without compromising performance. Next, she aims to improve water resistance and explore advanced coatings to further revolutionize eco-friendly food packaging!
