Summer research seed grants awarded to Institute of Medicine affiliated faculty
The Institute of Medicine awarded summer research seed grants to six affiliated faculty members. IoM requested proposals in the areas of health and life sciences. The program is meant to support the goals and objectives of the Institute and aims to generate new grant proposals for research funding from federal agencies, especially NIH.

Applicants were encouraged to explain, if applicable, if the IoM seed grant would be replacing funding paused, terminated, or otherwise interrupted from another source.
The funded projects include research on age related disease, cardiomyopathies, gut inflammation and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Cannabis Dosing Assessment and traumatic brain injury in children.
One of the projects “Genetic Influence on Physical Activity and Cognition in Middle Age” is a collaboration with Dr. Gareth Howell, a Jackson Laboratory faculty member affiliated with GSBSE.
Three of the projects will lead to submission or resubmission of NIH R15 grants.
The grants will fund graduate students summer stipends, travel to conferences, lab supplies, genome sequencing and tissue culture.
