Policies

IMPORTANT: To comply with UMaine policy, face masks must be worn at all time when inside the Hackerspace facility.

  • Checking out gear (in-space usage)
    • Gear must be checked out with staff approval before use.
    • Only students and faculty may check out gear (If available).
    • Any equipment should be returned by 5:00pm on the same day.
    • First infraction will lead to restricted gear access for 1 week.
    • Second infraction will lead to restricted gear access for the remainder of the semester.
    • Infractions involving breakage/replacement of equipment will be determined on a case to case basis.
    • No equipment may leave the Hackerspace.
    • Walk-in checkouts will be first come first serve but reservations may be made (at least 24 hours in advance).
    • Any memory storage devices returned with equipment will be erased.
  • Hours and access
    • There will be no access to the space before or after hours; please plan accordingly.
    • Equipment must be returned or locked down in a locker and students must leave the space by closing time.
    • No equipment may be retrieved after closing. Plan accordingly.
  • 3D printers and soldering stations
    • These stations will remain on a first-come-first-serve basis to start. If problems arise with this process please contact us at UM.Hackerspace@Maine.edu
      • Do NOT try to fix the printers on your own as it could void the warranty leaving you liable to future repair charges.
    • Patrons are permitted to bring their own filament so long as it meets the following criteria:
      • It’s 1.75 mm in diameter.
      • Must be PLA filament (No exceptions can be made at this time).
      • The Hackerspace and HS staff are not liable for any failed print jobs, lost filament, or damaged personal equipment.
      • Your filament is marked as yours. We recommend putting your name and UMaine email on the spool itself.
      • Using filament outside of these specifications could void our printer’s warranty leaving you liable for future repairs.
    • Students, faculty, and staff have access to 25g of PLA filament to be used on Hackerspace 3D printers
    • The 25g allotment is non-transferable, but may be combined for single print job with other patrons.
      • All patrons that are sharing their allotment must be present with Maine card photo ID both when submitting and retrieving their print job.
  • Locker usage
    • Lockers may be checked out for storage for up to 3 days at a time. The space will provide a lock but will not claim responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen items.
    • Lockers which are at the end of their reserved time will be cleaned out at the end of each day. We will hold any retrieved items for 24 hours. Anything not claimed at the end of the period will be claimed or removed by the space.
