History

I am an archaeologist and ancient historian with a particular interest in the Bronze and Iron Ages in the ancient Near East. I received my PhD from Harvard in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations with a secondary in Anthropology and an M.A. from Hebrew University in Cuneiform languages. My dissertation focused on peripheral economies under the Neo-Assyrian Empire. As an archaeologist I have been working over 20 years on sites in Israel including Tell es-Safi, Tel ‘Eton, Ashkelon, and currently Tel Shimron, where I serve as the director of Early Bronze Age research and co-director of Iron Age Research. I am currently working on the final publication of material from Ashkelon, most notably the 8th/9th c. BCE remains from the site. I teach primarily classes in ancient history of the Mediterranean and ancient Near East.
