Welcome to the RF Photonics Laboratory website at the University of Maine. The RF Photonics Laboratory is situated in the Engineering Science and Research Building (ESRB) Room 196. The Lab is part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department and closely collaborates with the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST).
Founded in 2007, the RF Photonics Laboratory conducts research in sensors, sensing systems, and optoelectronic devices. Current research projects include bee hive monitoring using radar, lateral field excited (LFE) bulk acoustic wave sensors, and electronics for sensor interfaces. Past research projects have included symmetric gain optoelectronic mixers for LADAR applications, harmonic direction finding radar and harmonic tags for juvenile wood frog tracking, instrumentation development color perception experiments for human vision, and energy harvesting for sensors. Five graduate students and 30 undergraduate students have worked in the RF Photonics Laboratory in the past decade. Four high school students have also participated in research at the RF Photonics Laboratory.
