In this lecture, Senator Mitchell will examine various economic, social and political factors that are contributing to the high level of polarization and frustration evident in America. He will focus on promising strategies for addressing this challenge, including ways citizens and communities can use deliberation and consensus-building to grow their capacity for problem-solving.
Senator George J. Mitchell is one of the most widely recognized and inspirational leaders in Maine. He served as the Democratic senator from Maine from 1980 to 1995 and Senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995. He was the primary architect of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement for peace in Northern Ireland, chairman of The Walt Disney Company, U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, and the author of the Mitchell Report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. Senator Mitchell is the author of six books, including, “The Negotiator: A Memoir” and his latest book, “A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East.”
