Infectious Disease Colloquium

April 18 @ 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm

Sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute of Medicine
Speakers: Two doctors from Northern Light
  • Scott Melton MD, Infectious Diseases, Northern Light Health
  • Mark Abel, MD, Infectious Diseases, Preventive Medicine, Northern Light Health
Abstract: Infectious diseases have been in the news headlines a lot recently, including Ebola, Covid-19, bird flu, and measles just to name a few. The global Covid-19 pandemic really put infectious disease experts in the spotlight, but these professionals have been researching, diagnosing and treating all types of infections for decades at your local hospitals and clinics. In this colloquium Northern Light Health physicians Mark Able, MD, MPH and Scott Melton, MD, PhD will discuss the training pathway to become an infectious disease physician and how these specialists interact with other medical providers in a typical hospital system. In addition, Dr Melton will share how the basic science knowledge and data interpretation skills he developed during his PhD work inform his clinical decision making. Dr Abel currently serves as the hospital epidemiologist in addition to his physician role. He will discuss the duties of a hospital epidemiologist with a focus on infectious disease surveillance and development of hospital policies.

All are welcome, faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students.
