Fulbright offers a range of programs to help U.S students and faculty to achieve their academic and professional goals while fostering international exchange and understanding. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad. Click on the links below to learn more about each program.

The 2026-2027 application is now open. Competition Deadline: Tuesday October 7, 2025 at 5 pm Eastern Time.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places U.S. citizens in classrooms abroad to assist local English teachers and engage with the host community. ETAs serve as cultural ambassadors, fostering mutual understanding between the United States and the host country.

The Fulbright Study/Research Award provides opportunities for students to conduct independent research, pursue graduate study, or engage in creative projects abroad. Fulbright Study/Research awards require a full academic year for completion.

The Fulbright-MITACS Globalink program offers U.S. students the chance to participate in advanced research projects in Canada. Alongside their academic research, students will be provided with extensive opportunities for cultural, social, and recreational experiences.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers over 400 awards in more than 135 countries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects around the world.  College and university faculty, as well as artists and professionals from a wide range of fields can join over 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections, and greater mutual understanding.

The Fulbright Specialist Program is a unique opportunity for U.S. academics and established professionals to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions across the globe.

The Office of Major Scholarships works primarily with domestic students to support Fulbright U.S. Student Award applications. Faculty can reach out to UMaine Office of Research Development for support on their applications (research@maine.edu). The Office of Major Scholarships (nives.dalbowheeler@maine.edu) is also available to share information on campus and system resources for faculty interested in these opportunities.
