UMaine CORE Genetics
About Us
The University of Maine CORE Genetics Facilities provide comprehensive molecular biology and genomics services that support research, environmental monitoring, education, and innovation across Maine and beyond. Serving academic investigators, government agencies, industry partners, non-profit organizations, and community groups, the facilities deliver expert technical services, state-of-the-art instrumentation, and collaborative scientific support for projects ranging from routine DNA analysis to advanced environmental genomics.
DNA Sequencing Facility
The CORE DNA Sequencing Facility provides high-quality Sanger DNA sequencing and fragment analysis services for researchers across the University of Maine System and external organizations. Equipped with high-throughput capillary sequencing instrumentation, the facility supports a broad range of applications including DNA sequence verification, mutation detection, microsatellite analysis, SNP genotyping, and fragment analysis. Flexible service options accommodate both full-service sequencing and client-prepared samples, providing rapid, reliable, and cost-effective molecular analysis for research, education, and diagnostic applications.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) Service Center
Environmental DNA (or eDNA) is simply genetic material that is present and detectable in environmental sources, such as water, soil or air. It comes from shed cells or decomposition products of larger organisms, like fish or plants, or can be from whole microorganisms like plankton and bacteria. Because DNA is an almost universal code for life, eDNA detection and quantification can be used to understand what organisms currently or previously occupied a given environment, providing a power tool to monitor, study, and manage biodiversity. The University of Maine CORE Environmental DNA Laboratory was established in 2019 through an investment of the Office of the Vice President of Research and Dean of the Graduate School to establish the Coordinated Operating Research Entities (CORE) program and contributions to major equipment from the NSF EPSCoR RII Track 1 Program (Grant # 11A-1849227). We provide eDNA services for academic, government, non-governmental, industry and citizen group organizations.
