Writing Intensive Institute

May 21-22 | 9:00am – 4:30pm | Fernald Hall, Room 102

CITL in partnership with UMaine Department of English is excited to offer a 2-day in-depth faculty development opportunity for instructors preparing to teach (or modify) a writing intensive (WI) course at UMaine.

What is the Writing Intensive Workshop?

This workshop is designed to help instructors create effective writing assignments and assessments for UMaine courses in any discipline, with a special emphasis on those designated as writing intensive (WI). Over the two days, we will focus on identifying what good writing for your specific classroom looks like, articulating writing-related
objectives appropriate for your course level and class size, aligning these objectives with the WI learning outcomes and assessment rubric, and then designing (and refining) assignments and assessments for your specific courses. We will integrate breaks for reflection, nourishment and recharging throughout the two days.

Additional Information

Led by Heather Falconer, an Associate Professor in English and specialist in Writing Across the Curriculum, we will use strategies rooted in writing studies research to set ourselves and our students up for success. There will be a mix of shared learning and independent work, with the opportunity to receive feedback on your materials. Particular areas of focus will include exploring how to use writing:

  • as a means of teaching content and assessing learning (writing to learn)
  • increasing student engagement (writing to engage)
  • teaching disciplinary ways of thinking and communicating (writing in the disciplines)
