Course Development & Support

Course development and support is a cyclical process, and CITL considers our work with instructors to be a partnership in which we provide continued support. With the ADDIE philosophy in mind, support following the launch of your course flows back into strategizing ways to make your course better in the future.

Here’s a brief timeline that instructors can expect during the process of course development:

  • One “kickoff” meeting to establish our goals.
  • 2-4 weeks of initial project planning
  • 5-8 weeks of course planning
  • 7-10 weeks for production and prototyping
  • 3-4 weeks for course finalization and quality check

Here’s a breakdown of the ADDIE process and what we do:

Analyze/Assess. Members of the CITL team will work with each instructor to set out the scope and duration of the course design, identifying the target audience, instructional goals and objectives, the current learning constraints, the outcomes to be achieved, and the delivery options to be implemented.
(A typical course design project for a new course takes about six months from strategy to implementation. Depending on the availability of the instructor and the amount and complexity of the material to be developed, the project could be completed in more or less time.)

Design. With the desired impact and learning outcomes of the project established, we consult with faculty to define the roles of the instructors (faculty and teaching assistants) and students, create a user-friendly interface and appropriate visual design, and apply instructional strategies tailored to desired outcomes.

Develop. This involves putting together the content created in the design phase. Our media team handles the entire production and testing processes from creation of multimedia material and digitization of resources to launch.

Implement. We not only test the project in live classroom, hybrid or online settings, we offer training to instructors on methods of delivery of the newly designed curriculum. Our staff will also train students on the use of the new software and hardware for the course. We will then subsequently launch the course.

Evaluate. Post-implementation testing is necessary to ensure the design works and will achieve defined outcomes. It also provides opportunities for instructors and students to provide feedback on the design.

CITL will continue to provide training and support to instructors throughout the duration of the class.
