Esther Martin

Esther “Essie” Martin is from Bremen Maine. Growing up on the coast of Maine she has observed firsthand the impacts of warming oceans and rising sea levels on traditional fisheries and native species. This led Essie to pursue an undergraduate degree in Geology with a focus in geochemistry and climate change from Bates College in Lewiston Maine where she will graduate in 2022. In 2019, Essie joined the Brady lab as a SEANET intern.  At the lab Essie studied the potential for oyster aquaculture in derelict lobster pounds.  Currently Essie is working with Bates and the Darling Center to study kelp’s potential for blue carbon sequestration. Essie is a 2020 Truman Scholar, for students seeking careers as public service leaders, her focus for the scholarship is based on aquaculture as a long term sustainable solution for traditional fisheries feeling strain in the face of climate change.
