tish carr

tish carr was born in Hawaii when it was still a Territory of the US. She spent her first seven years with the Pacific Ocean as her front yard and personal playground, and the Hawaiian culture as a guiding light for her future journeys stateside, which were mostly in Maine. tish earned a Bachelor’s of Science in both Forestry and Wildlife Management at the University of Maine and spent over 35 years in community forestry and arboriculture. During tish’s time in community forestry, she worked extensively with communities and underrepresented youth around the country. Her passion for working with underrepresented communities and youth helped launched her Master’s project in 2013 to develop a model educational program to enhance Native Youth’s persistence in science in secondary education. This lead tish to pursue and complete her Ph.D. in Ecology and Environmental Science in 2019. Her research indicates that the inclusion of Cultural Knowledge within western science as an equal and integral part in post-secondary academia enhanced learning for Native and non-native college science students. When not working as the Executive Director for the Wabanaki Youth in Science (WaYS) program, teaching or consulting, tish enjoys quiet time either at her farm or at her family’s camp, paddling, swimming, hiking, or horseback riding.
