Sea-to-Sky Experience 2025

Sea to Sky Experience Logo

The University of Maine School of Earth and Climate Sciences Sea-to-Sky Experience (ERS 410) is an immersive travel study course that takes students to geologically dynamic regions for hands-on field learning. In 2025, the course partnered with GeoCamp Iceland, where students explored glaciers, volcanoes, geothermal systems, and coastal environments.
Students develop essential professional skills including research design, field observations, risk assessment, and collaborative problem-solving. A cornerstone of the experience is science communication—learning to translate fieldwork into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
Through a collaboration with Spire: The Maine Journal of Conservation and Sustainability, students work with artist and Spire contributor Jill Pelto to communicate their experiences through creative art projects, integrating visual storytelling with rigorous Earth science.
The student projects below showcase this blend of fieldwork and creative communication.
