The SPEED Lab is the research group of Dr. David Hiebeler, a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine.

Research efforts focus on computational and mathematical models of populations on landscapes.  These landscapes often include different types/qualities of heterogeneous habitat, arranged in various patterns with spatial correlations.  These models have applications to the effects of habitat loss, the behavior of invasive species, and the spread of malicious software such as computer worms in networks — malicious software often uses biologically-inspired strategies to spread through networks.

Outreach efforts over the years have included visits to K-12 classrooms, workshops aimed at K-12 students, an exhibit for children at the Maine Discovery Museum, and a software app for mobile devices.

Dr. Hiebeler can be contacted via email at: david.hiebeler (-at-) maine.edu. Inquiries about registering for courses should be directed to the office staff of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, by email at mathstats@maine.edu or by phone at 207-581-3900.
