About UMaine’s School of Economics
Thanks for your interest in UMaine’s School of Economics (SOE).
We offer high quality undergraduate and graduate degrees in Economics and related fields, conduct cutting edge research of local importance and global significance, and work with a vast group of partners and communities.
The LinkedIn profiles of SOE graduates show that our students get jobs as Data Analysts, Financial Advisors, Project Managers, Consultants and Environmental Scientists—just to name a few. They span the globe from London, Ontario, to London, England, and Los Angeles to New York. Just over 50 percent are working in Maine, and another 8 percent are a little further down I-95 in Boston. The most cited workforce skills of our former students are using Microsoft Excel, leadership, data analysis, research, customer service, public speaking, Economics (of course), and computer programming.
The portfolio of research studies conducted by SOE faculty and students is broad and impactful. We study topics such as housing evictions, integration of financial markets, agricultural and food systems, labor market dynamics, and the impacts of PFAS on our environment and communities—among many other subjects. And best of all, SOE students work with their peers and alongside SOE faculty and our partners to find solutions to some of society’s most pressing issues while building analytical and research skills.
Many of our activities are supported by our partners and organizations such as the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station, National Science Foundation, Maine Department of Marine Resources, US Economic Development Administration, US Environmental Protection Agency, Maine Climate Council, US Department of Agriculture, and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. Our work strongly benefits from the many collaborations that we build, and a network of world class scholars in UMaine’s College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences, and across the entire campus and system.
Thanks, again, for your interest and we hope you’ll join us—as a student, partner or collaborator—in the School of Economics.
