Barbara Trafton
Barbara Trafton grew up in Rumford, Maine on the banks of the Androscoggin River, the inspiration for Senator Ed Muskie’s landmark Clean Water and Air Acts in the ‘70s and her inspiration for a lifetime of volunteer efforts to conserve and protect Maine’s natural resources. Barbara has helped to steward these assets through her legislative work as both a Maine State Representative and State Senator, her service on boards for Maine Audubon and The Nature Conservancy, and her current tenure on the Land for Maine’s Future Board.
Barbara received her B.A. from Wellesley College, an M.S. in Education from the University of Southern Maine, and an M.B.A. from Northeastern University. She has held positions as an English teacher, an Aquatics Director for the YWCA, a healthcare executive, a volunteer fundraiser for local and state non-profits, and the author of Women Winning: How to Run for Office and The Women’s Campaign Game.
Barbara has served previously as the Chair of Maine Housing Authority, a Director of Casco Bank, a Director of the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce, a Trustee of Maine Maritime Academy, the Chair of Bates College’s Garcelon Scholarship Fund, and a Trustee of the Auburn Public Library.
Barbara lives in Brunswick with her husband Richard and has three children and four grandchildren. They enjoy Maine’s four seasons through cycling, kayaking, hiking, and skiing.
