Allison Leavitt, Lisbon School Department

Allison Leavitt

The Lisbon School Department, specifically Lisbon Community School participated in the pilot program of the Food Waste Reduction Study with the University of Maine, Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions. In a school of 600+ students, this was a large undertaking. Through guidance and practice, students understood the value of feeding their bodies, not the landfill. Two years later, the Sugg Middle School was the first middle school in the state to participate in the study. This was a much more natural progression as we had implemented practices at all schools including sorting stations and compost bins. There is always more work to be done, however all schools are successfully diverting food waste from landfills and expanding their knowledge to their homes.

Allison Leavitt has been the Nutrition Director for the Lisbon School Department for the past 10 years, overseeing 4 schools serving an average of 1500 meals per day. In addition to her role of Nutrition Director, Allison is the current President of Maine School Nutrition Association collaborating with school nutrition professionals throughout the state and nationally. Allison is very passionate about School Nutrition, working at both the state and national level to ensure School Meals for All continues within the state of Maine.

When she is not doing all things school nutrition related, Allison enjoys being with her husband and 2 boys, going camping, skiing and playing golf.
