My name is Andrew Treat, and I’m thrilled to be studying Oceanography at UMaine as a PhD student. Raised by educators in Connecticut, I managed to live in three different counties in the third-smallest US state, eventually settling in New Haven. My love for marine science developed over the summers in Gloucester, MA, where I’d live with grandparents and spend most days in, on, or around the ocean. At Bowdoin College, I majored in Earth and Oceanographic Science, where I fell in love with the interdisciplinary nature of oceanography. Most recently, I taught marine science and oceanography in The Bahamas for roughly two years at The Island School (Sp ’17 Alum). I love skiing, fly fishing, freediving, and the Boston Bruins.
Co-advised by Tiago Bilo and Damian Brady, my first project as a PhD student aims to simulate wastewater treatment plant outflow originating from the East End in Portland, providing the state of Maine with a stronger predictive model for effluent distributions and concentrations in the Casco Bay estuary. I’m grateful to be able to return to Maine and call it home once again.
