In August of 2021, ARI participated in a strategic planning retreat to strengthen the sustainability and diversity goals of the institute. Inclusivity was added as a core value and two new objectives were appended to guide social sustainability:
Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization and the sector | Engage with Wabanaki communities to facilitate participation in the sector

the UMaine Wabanaki Center and ARI were awarded a USDA-NIFA Research AND Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) GRANT
Aquaculture Experiential Opportunities for Undergraduate Students (AquEOUS): Integrating Western Science through Applied Aquaculture Research
This fellowship program will engage with a diverse cohort of undergraduates from across the nation bringing together Traditional Ecological Knowledge and applied aquaculture science. The program supports providing more training opportunities and career paths for underrepresented students. The first students will be on the Orono campus in June of 2023 for 10 weeks
