Headwater Stream Diagnostics
WPES is working with stakeholders to collaboratively develop diagnostic stream assessment tools to help guide watershed and forest products business and land owners in natural resources management decision-making in Northern Maine. Undergraduate research assistants are working with Drs. Sean Smith and Neil Thompson to measure, map, and assess headwater stream conditions in woodland areas of northern Maine where active forest harvest activities are underway. Outcomes are being framed to demonstrate how efficient approaches for monitoring and diagnosing stream channel conditions and dynamics can be implemented to provide new watershed management decision tools for land owners and businesses in the region.
Result from the year-long investigation have been summarized in a poster that received Honorable Mention in the Undergraduate Poster Competition in the 2023 Maine Sustainability and Water Conference.
