Training UVAC Members

Voluntary training classes are held approximately every other week, led by licensed UVAC personnel. The topics vary depending on the expertise of the student instructors and can include subjects such as scene safety, effective communication, and sports injury prevention.

Learning-Based Service

Although these sessions are primarily designed for licensed EMTs to earn continuing education hours, all members are welcome and encouraged to attend. UVAC also frequently invites neighboring communities to participate, offering them the opportunity to gain new skills and expand their knowledge base through these trainings.

All new hires for UVAC are required to complete our onboarding process before being allowed on the ambulance. To complete their onboarding training, new hires must:

  • Attend Rookie Day
  • Complete mandatory paperwork
  • Have their BLS CPR certification (Provided by UVAC)
  • Complete 3 competency checks
  • Demonstrate the ability to take vital signs
  • Demonstrate the ability to use and operate UVAC equipment

What is a “competency check”?

All new members must go through competency checks with their assigned mentors. In these checks the mentor will go over:

  • All truck supplies and their function
  • All UVAC standard operating and policies and procedures
  • Primary and Driver clearing processes
  • How to take vital signs
  • Basic UVAC operations

For their final competency check, the new hire will be quizzed on the location of truck supplies, and will be tested on their ability to use the stretcher. Upon successful completion of their last competency check, members will be allowed to sign up for their first shift on the next available night shift. Members are then required to attend two trainings (held twice per week) per semester, but are encouraged to attend as many as they’d like, as well as pursue further certification.

Becoming a driver is the best way to get more involved at UVAC without having a medical license. To become a driver, members must take an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), be BLS CPR certified, get their Maine EMS Drivers license, and complete UVAC’s Driver Training Program.

What Does a UVAC Driver Do?

The driver on duty is responsible for the general welfare of the ambulance, the safe transport of the crew and patients, as well as radio communication with dispatch. All UVAC drivers have are required to complete EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) as well as meet University of Maine System requirements to operate University vehicles and in addition, complete a specialized UVAC training regiment.

Driver Training Program

The AVOC cone course

The driver training program requires that all trainees demonstrate comfort behind the wheel of an ambulance in a non-emergent and emergent setting. To demonstrate this, the trainee must be observed by designated driver trainers (those who have shown extensive knowledge of an ambulance, and are aware of all rules pertaining to their safe operation). The program also requires that the trainee safely transport a minimum of three patients to the hospital while on duty and demonstrate competent driving ability and awareness. Once cleared by the Captain of Operations, trainees are able to work any shift in the “Driver” position.

AED Program

Public Access AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators)

In addition to responding to requests for emergency medical services, UVAC also provides education and preparedness programs throughout the campus community to promote a healthy and safe environment. One of UVAC’s major accomplishments over the past few years has been a campus-wide Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program.

UVAC facilitates the purchase and installation of the AEDs with departments on campus that want to obtain one. Using the state of Maine AED grants, we  have successfully deployed fifty-five (55) AEDs across campus. All of which are serviced and maintained on a monthly basis by UVAC to ensure proper function in the event of a cardiac emergency.

What does an AED do?

An AED works by attaching to an unconscious person with specialized pads that stick to a persons chest. It then analyzes the heart’s electrical activity and determines if a shock is needed to restore normal electrical activity. AED’s are designed to be easy to use, and do not require any training. The device will talk you through every step. High quality CPR and the use of AED on a person in cardiac arrest greatly increases a persons chances of survival.

There are currently 19 portable and 36 mounted AEDs in service:
