The University of Maine achieves record-breaking success in its innovative research and development (R&D) efforts. For the fifth consecutive year, UMaine’s research enterprise has achieved all-time high record levels in growth and impact, as measured by multiple indicators, including R&D funding received and expended.

Specifically, in the fiscal year 2024, the total external funding has reached $225.3 million, as compared to $189.7 million for fiscal year 2023, resulting in a 19% increase over the previous year and 147% increase over six years. Additionally, total expenditures for research, development and other scholarly activities have reached $249.3 million, as compared to $245.7 million for fiscal year 2023, resulting in a 1.5% increase over the previous year and 81% increase over 6 years.

“This accomplishment could not have been made without the contributions of our faculty, staff and students. The University of Maine is a premiere center of research and learning due to their creativity, hard work, and dedication to our mission, the state of Maine, and beyond,” said Joan Ferrini-Mundy, President of the University of Maine.

These achievements are indicative of UMaine’s ongoing advancement as a modern 21st-century research university and R1 research institution. This classification places UMaine among the top 3.7% of degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the United States, reflecting its national and global research impact.

“The continued growth and success of our research enterprise are a testament to the dedication and outstanding work of our faculty, staff, and students. Our record-breaking funding and expenditures not only reflect the high caliber of research and scholarly activity conducted at UMaine, but also reinforce our position as a leader in advancing knowledge and innovation that are translated from problems to real-world solutions in Maine and beyond.” said Kody Varahramyan, UMaine’s Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. “We are incredibly proud of this achievement and excited for the future as UMaine continues to advance on its path of global impact and local relevance.”
