The Penobscot Nation Cultural & Historic Preservation Office hosts the Penobscot Cultural Tourism Program. This program offers a paddling adventure along the Penobscot River within the cultural landscape of the Penobscot Nation. These cultural canoe trips also offer an immersive experience into Penobscot culture and history.

The Penobscot Cultural Tourism Program provides a platform for educational outreach for all ages. During these cultural canoe trips, the clients/guests will experience and learn about Penobscot culture and history through hands-on activities with Registered Maine Guides, Penobscot Cultural/River Guides, Educators, Historians and Artists.

During the course of the standard 4-day canoe trip, the Penobscot Cultural Tourism Program offers the following:

• River Safety Instruction

• Penobscot History and Sense of Place

• Introduction to Traditional Plants – Medicinal and Food

• Archaeology of the Penobscot River Watershed

• Traditional Penobscot Handicrafts – Basket Making, Wood Carving, Flintknapping

• Experience Paddling a Birch Bark Canoe and Visiting a Wigwam Village

• Traditional Foods

• Nature Trail Walks

• Fireside Talking Circles

• Introduction to Traditional and Contemporary Drumming/Singing

• Visit the Penobscot Nation Museum

Safety is a key issue with the Penobscot Cultural Tourism Canoe Trips. The program has experienced Registered Maine Guides and Cultural River Guides who are knowledgeable of the Penobscot River, including (but not limited to) basic river safety, cultural and historic locations, as well as the flora and fauna living along the river. The guides within the Cultural Tourism Program are Wilderness First Aid and CPR Certified.
