Ecology and Environmental SciencES
It is widely understood that human and environmental health are facing serious problems across the globe, and that understanding–and solving–these problems requires comprehensive study. Ecology and Environmental Sciences (EES) is an interdisciplinary degree program that emphasizes the inextricable link between humans and the environment. Students in the program receive solid training in the natural and social sciences. Our outstanding faculty spans a breadth of disciplines including geosciences, soils, biology, ecology, environmental sciences, economics, policy and more.
EES offers students courses and research opportunities with world-class faculty spanning over a dozen academic disciplines ranging from ecology to environmental engineering and anthropology. Our faculty and students are engaged in cutting-edge research on complex environmental problems in Maine’s forests, lakes, streams, marine and estuarine systems, agricultural systems and human communities. We are proud that students in EES receive broad-based training in both biophysical sciences and social sciences.
EES students have the support of academic advisors who work to personalize each student’s program to meet their career goals. Each student is supported both by faculty and professional mentors to provide opportunities outside of the classroom to prepare them for work in ecology and environmental sciences.
Concentrations include: Environmental Earth and Climate Sciences, Ecosystem Ecology, Natural History and Environmental Studies, Soil and Water Science, Sustainability, Environmental Policy, and Natural Resource Management, or customize and Individualized concentration!
EES is an interdisciplinary program that brings together students and faculty with interests spanning biological, physical, and social sciences at UMaine. Your instructors and classmates will come from different departments across the UMaine College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering and Computing. The EES community shares a commitment to addressing contemporary environmental and social problems, through research integrating concepts and tools from multiple scientific fields. Our curriculum is designed to offer flexibility for students to develop their own paths through the program that reflect their professional interests.
