To receive credit for your military coursework, you must request to have an official copy of your Joint Services Transcript (JST) sent to the Office of Student Records (OSR) for evaluation. Transcripts can be ordered at jst.doded.mil/jst and are typically available for download within 1–2 business days after submission. Please note, JSTs will not be evaluated for credit until you have been admitted to a degree-seeking program at UMaine.

During the JST evaluation process OSR will identify courses which qualify for credit at UMaine and will award credit for the courses which appear to most closely relate to the degree program you are enrolled in, or courses which may be used to satisfy degree requirements (up to a maximum of 15 credits). Questions regarding which courses you received credit for should be directed to either um.cpl@maine.edu or your Associate Dean’s (AD) Office.

  • If you’ve been admitted to a degree program and your JST has been received, but no corresponding credits appear on your Transfer Credit Report (found in your Student Center within MaineStreet), you can contact um.cpl@maine.edu for assistance.
  • Credit for Military Coursework: Only courses recommended at the upper or lower baccalaureate level will be evaluated for credit (vocational and graduate level courses do not qualify).  A maximum of 15 credits will be allowed as military course credit and the courses will count as elective credit only, unless an exception is approved. If seeking an exception you should contact your AD’s Office to make a request. Your AD’s Office will work with the appropriate department(s) to determine if an exception should be granted; supporting documentation may be required for review.
  • Credit for Other Military Experience & Training: Prior Learning related to training and other experiences in the military will be considered for CPL in the same way as other prior experiential learning. This type of experiential learning may be evaluated via CLEP/DSST exams or an Academic Portfolio Assessment (up to a maximum of 30 credits is allowed via Academic Portfolio Assessment).  If you have relevant experiences which relate to your program of study at UMaine you can contact your AD’s Office for more information.
