Matriculated students who are currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program.

This depends on the type of experience or coursework you have completed!  If you have reviewed the types of CPL listed on this site and still have questions feel free to email the Office of Student Records staff at: um.cpl@maine.edu

If you are looking for college credit, the learning that qualifies for credit must be college level. College level learning is related to your degree goals, is reasonably current depending on the subject, and not repeat learning for which you have already been awarded credit.

While there is no overall limit to the number of credits which can be earned through CPL, the following limits apply to various types of CPL.  University residency requirements must also be satisfied.

  • Military Coursework – 15 credits
  • Credential Reviews – 15 credits
  • Academic Portfolio Assessment – 30 credits

You will be notified via a message in your MaineStreet Student Center when credits are awarded for CPL.

CPL awarded will appear on your transcript as a type of transfer credit, under the header “Other Credits”. Like other types of transfer credit, CPL will not impact your UMaine GPA.

It might – so be sure that your request for CPL makes sense for you.  For example, if you have enough credits to be a junior but are only beginning courses in your specific major and will need to spend more than two years full time to complete the requirements, you might have issues with financial aid. Reach out to Student Financial Aid for more information.
