You may be eligible to earn up to a maximum of 15 credits for certain certifications, licenses, micro-credentials/digital badges, registered apprenticeships or other credentials which originate from organizations outside of a higher education setting when there is an appropriate subject matter expert to review the learning and it is deemed applicable toward your degree progress.
Any type of Credential Review will require valid proof of learning, such as the license or certificate awarded, course materials, or other information. Micro-credentials or digital badges earned through any for-credit courses, for which the student already has earned credit at UMaine, will not earn additional credit through the CPL process. Please be aware that submitting credential documentation does not guarantee that credits will be awarded.
To request a Credential Review, you will need to submit a Credential Review Request Form, which can be obtained by contacting your Associate Dean’s (AD’s) Office or emailing um.cpl@maine.edu. You may want to consult with your AD’s Office prior to submitting your request to verify that your credential is able to be evaluated and is applicable toward your degree progress.
If your AD’s Office supports the request they will work with the appropriate subject matter experts to have your prior learning experience evaluated. They will contact you if additional information is needed.
Once the subject matter experts have evaluated your prior learning experience they will make a credit recommendation to your AD’s Office. If your experience is recommended for credit and determined to be applicable toward your degree progress, then your AD’s Office will grant approval for OSR to award the applicable credits. If your request is not able to be evaluated or credit is not approved then your AD’s Office will notify you.
