New Hire Training

All new hires for UVAC are required to complete our onboarding process before being allowed on the ambulance. To complete their onboarding training, new hires must:

  • Attend Rookie Day
  • Complete mandatory paperwork
  • Have their BLS CPR certification (Provided by UVAC)
  • Complete 3 competency checks
  • Demonstrate the ability to take vital signs
  • Demonstrate the ability to use and operate UVAC equipment

What is a “competency check”?

All new members must go through competency checks with their assigned mentors. In these checks the mentor will go over:

  • All truck supplies and their function
  • All UVAC standard operating and policies and procedures
  • Primary and Driver clearing processes
  • How to take vital signs
  • Basic UVAC operations

For their final competency check, the new hire will be quizzed on the location of truck supplies, and will be tested on their ability to use the stretcher.

Upon successful completion of their last competency check, members will be allowed to sign up for their first shift on the next available night shift.

Members are then required to attend two trainings (held twice per week) per semester, but are encouraged to attend as many as they’d like, as well as pursue further certification
