Researchers at the University of Maine have partnered with three coastal communities and the Reuse Maine Coalition to explore the potential of reusable takeout packaging to reduce waste and benefit local businesses and consumers.
Restaurants in Bar Harbor, Bath, and South Portland are piloting reusable packaging systems. Customers can support the pilots by visiting participating businesses starting early 2026.
This research is part of an interdisciplinary marine debris reduction project funded by NOAA, Maine Sea Grant, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
