ABOUT US

The University of Maine Police Department is a fully operational and accredited police department consisting of administrative, patrol, investigative, and communications divisions.

Our officers attend the State of Maine Basic Law Enforcement Training Program which is required by law for all law enforcement officers within the State. Upon graduation, as certified Maine police officers, we are charged with upholding and enforcing all applicable Maine laws and any University-specific policies.

Additionally, our department is unique because it is one of only a few departments that still maintains an active dispatch center and dispatches its own calls.

Functionally, the police department is nested under the Division of Student Life and shares the vision of service to the community, fully participating in the developmental stage of our students. We teach lessons in personal safety through programs and presentations in classrooms, residence halls and community events.

In 2025, we completed our pursuit for accreditation with the Maine Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (MLEAP). We are proudly the first University Law Enforcment agency within the State to obtain this honor.
