Chief’s Greeting
A Message from the University of Maine Chief of Police:
On behalf of the members of the University of Maine Police Department, welcome to our website. We encourage you to explore it and hope it can be a source of information for you.
The University of Maine Police Department is a full-service police department staffed by state-certified police officers and support personnel 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. The training and professional standards met by UMaine’s officers are the same as those required in any municipality across the state.
Because of the unique nature of a university community and the activities that take place in it, UMaine officers are “specialists.” They are practitioners of a kind of police work that makes them a vital and positive force in the community that they protect and serve.
Our philosophy is to employ the principles of community policing. UMPD officers are empowered to work in partnership with the community to prevent crime and solve problems that affect students, visitors, faculty, and staff. The community’s well-being, providing service and assistance whenever possible and supporting the academic environment are factors in our day-to-day operations.
