Emergency Action Plan:
Leaders should address emergencies in the field to their level of training and determine whether evacuation is necessary.
As soon as possible, leaders responding to an emergency should document the incident, including:
– Time of incident
– Environmental conditions
– Parties involved
– Injury/illness assessment
– Anticipated problems
– Treatment plan
– Any changes to group location or route
If evacuation is needed:
– Determine whether some or all of the parties will be evacuating.
All parties – whether evacuating or remaining in the field – must have:
– One of the trip leaders present
– Adequate water
– Food
– Shelter equipment
– First aid kit
– Appropriate navigation tools
– Communication device (GPS communicator, phone)
– A written plan of action
– A copy of this expedition plan
As soon as leaders involved in the evacuation or life-threatening emergency are able to establish contact with outside resources, the Emergency Contact Protocol in this plan must be followed.
In the event of an emergency requiring evacuation, we will follow these procedures:
Day 1:
If an emergency requiring an evacuation occurs on Day 1, and we are west of Slime Creek Meadow, we will backtrack west on Slime Creek Trail to Slime Creek Trailhead. MU Van #23 will be used for vehicle transport to Monstropolis General Hospital. If additional support is needed, the Slime Creek Ranger Station provides communication and emergency resources.
If an emergency requiring evacuation occurs on Day 1, and we are east of Slime Creek Meadow, we will continue east to the Slime Creek Ranger Station via the Meadow Spur Trail. From the Ranger Station, staff can coordinate vehicle transport or Search & Rescue (SAR) is required. We will exit the backcountry via the main Scream Ridge Access Road.
Day 2:
If an emergency requiring evacuation occurs on Day 2, and we are south of the Scream Ridge Overlook Junction, we will continue south toward the Slime Creek Trail Junction and proceed to the Slime Creek Trailhead for vehicle evacuation. If trail conditions or injury prevent reaching the trailhead, we will divert to the Slime Creek Ranger Station for support and communication. From there, we will use the Scream Ridge Access Road to exit the area.
If an emergency requiring evacuation occurs on Day 2, and we are north of the Scream Ridge Overlook Junction, we will head north to the Scream Ridge Access Road Crossing (1 mile west of the northern ridge section). From the Scream Ridge Access Road, we will travel to the Slime Creek Ranger Station or rendezvous with SAR depending on terrain and weather conditions. All exits will proceed via the main Slime Creek corridor and Scream Ridge Access Road.
Day 3:
If an emergency requiring evacuation occurs on Day 3, and we are north of Scream Ridge Campsite #2, we will continue toward the Slime Creek Trailhead via the main Slime Creek Trail. We will exit via the Scream Ridge Access Road. If assistance is needed, Slime Creek Ranger Station personnel can provide support.
If an emergency requiring evacuation occurs on Day 3, and we are south of Scream Ridge Campsite #2 located at higher elevation on the Scream Ridge Pass, we will descend immediately to lower terrain – if injury and weather permit – using the Scream Ridge Descent Path. Once at lower elevation, we will move to the Slime Creek Trailhead. MU Van #23 will be used for vehicle transport to Monstropolis General Hospital.
