Intertidal invaders
The aliens stowed away in the ballast rock of the great 19th-century sailing ships that brought trade and emigrants from Europe to Nova Scotia.

Once in North America, the rockweed species Fucus serratus and the herbivorous snail Littorina littorea colonized the shores, launching a biological invasion affecting the intertidal community structure in the northwestern Atlantic.
